Lightning Strikes Bedford Home from Underground, Causes Fire

Bedford firefighter left scene in an ambulance.

Two Bedford condominiums were severely damaged by smoke and fire Thursday after lightning struck a nearby tree and ran up through the ground into an exterior electric panel.

Bedford Fire Chief Scott Wiggin told Bedford Patch that the garage and attic area at 19 and 21 Reed Road suffered extensive smoke and heat damage, but noted the structure was far from a loss.

A Bedford firefighter was transported from the scene by ambulance after experiencing what Wiggin termed a "medical event." He said the firefighter, whose name was not released, was taken to a nearby hospital and no other information was available.

The two-plus alarm fire brought mutual aid from Amherst, Goffstown, Hooksett, Hudson, Litchfield, Manchester, Merrimack and New Boston.

Bedford Patch will provide an update to this story if and when additional details are made available.
