BHS Athletics Director Honored by State

Bill Whitmore adds another award to his already impressive mantle.

By all accounts, Bedford High School has become a model for both academic and athletic success in New Hampshire.

Recently, BHS Athletics Director Bill Whitmore was honored for his role in that success, and for his service to Granite State high school sports, earning the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) James W. Desmarais Service Award at the 2013 NHIAA Annual Meeting held in Concord on Sept. 16.

Whitmore has served as the BHS Athletics Administrator since July 2009. Prior to his arrival in Bedford, he served as the Athletic Director at Milton Academy (MA) for three years and as Director of Athletics and Physical Education for Concord High School from 1990 to 2006. Whitmore was selected as the NH Athletic Director of the Year three times while at Concord High School.

During Whitmore’s tenure at Concord, the high school won 55 NH state championships and was runner up 41 times. Whitmore has served on numerous NHIAA sport committees and directed a number of NHIAA Championship Tournaments. He has been a long time proponent of the NHIAA Leadership Program which promotes leadership, sportsmanship, community service and wellness in NHIAA member schools. As a component of the program, student/athletes from all NH schools attend a Leadership Conference in the spring each year. In his short tenure at Bedford, Bedford High School has received the prestigious NHIAA Sportsmanship Award recognizing good sportsmanship by athletes, coaches and spectators for the 2010-'11 and 2011-'12 school years.

The James W. Desmarais Service Award was instituted in 1970 and renamed for long time NHIAA Executive Director, James Desmarais. This award is given to recognize meritorious service to the NHIAA. There have been 60 dedicated individuals recognized for this honor since its inception.
