School Board Chair to Mayes: 'You Will Leave us in Good Hands'

Longtime Bedford Assistant Superintendent expected to succeed Mayes.

There have been many words of gratitude and encouragement passed along to Bedford School District Superintendent Timothy Mayes since he announced his retirement – effective at the end of the 2013-'14 school year – on Monday.

Bedford School Board Chairman Terry Wolf was one of the first to express her appreciation for the hard work and thoughtful management Mayes exhibited in his 13 years directing Bedford's schools.

"Everyone in this room would like you to stay yet we all understand the time and dedication you have given this district in the last 12 years and to ask for more isn't fair," she said at the school board's Monday meeting. "I have a lot more I would like to say but you still have five months, two weeks and four days left, so I will save it for another day and simply say thank you.

"You will leave us in good hands," she added.

Wolf explained that the district has already initiated contract negotiations with Chip McGee, who has been with the district for the last 11 years,

"Bedford has a history of promoting from within and the Board is pleased to be able to do so again," she said.

McGee was first hired by former superintendent Ann Remus, who also hired Mayes before the latter stepped into her position in 2006.

McGee began in Bedford as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction. Prior to arriving in Bedford, he helped found the Beacon School, which Wolf noted is recognized as one of the best public schools in New York City.

McGee studied history and education as a undergraduate at Brown University and has an MBA and doctorate in education from Columbia University.

"Chip has played a critical role in creating Bedford High School and the realignment of grades pK-12," said Wold. "He has an excellent relationship with the teachers and staff and understands the expectations of the community. His background and his experience in Bedford will provide a smooth leadership transition that we are fortunate to have and is rare in other districts."

Mayes echoed Wolf's sentiment.

"I am grateful for having the opportunity to work in Bedford.  It is a wonderful place to live and work. The community expects a lot, but supports its children and schools in so many ways. The collective efforts of our administrators, teachers, staff, parents and community all contribute to the success of our kids and schools," he said. "I am so excited for Chip McGee, who is in contract negotiations with the board to be the next superintendent. He is a talented educator who has a very good relationship with the staff and community. He and the staff will form a wonderful team for our children."

Bedford Patch will provide updates if and when a a successful agreement is reached between McGee and the district.
