Obituary: NYC Transplant, 83

Former Merchant Marine and Army Veteran lived in Bedford for the later years of his life.

George Colon, 83, of Bedford passed away November 1, 2013 at his residence following a sudden illness. He was born in New York, NY on December 21, 1929, the son of Dionisio and Mariana Colon. He was raised in New York and resided there until relocating to Bedford to be near a son following his retirement.

George sailed with the Merchant Marine for two years after he left high school and served in the US Army. For many years he was employed by Local 32 B SEIU as a building superintendent. Above all else, family was most important to George. He is cherished as a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who always cared about keeping the family together. 

He is survived by five children, Clifford Colon of Pleasant Valley, NY, Laura Judge of Levittown, NY, George Colon of Bedford, Gregory Colon of Manhattan NY and Christine Colon of Staten Island NY; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Jennell, Melissa, Ines, Natalie, Thomas and Kevin; five great grandchildren, Layla, Eva, Sofia, Isaac and Ethan; a sister, Gladys Hernandez as well as nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday at 11 AM in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd., Bedford. Cremation will follow.
