Obituary: Former Canadian Loved Living in Bedford

69-year-old UNH graduate became a U.S. citizen in 2006.

Neil D. Smith, 69, of Bedford, died suddenly on Dec. 11, 2013, at his home.

Born in Ottawa, Canada, on June 3, 1944, he was the son of Louie and Lois (Lamb) Smith. Raised in Canada, Mr. Smith moved to the States in 1973.

He graduated from Vancouver College High School. He later earned a bachelor of arts degree in business from the University of New Hampshire in 1968.

In his early years, he was a sales representative. After his retirement, he worked part time at Armstrong Heating.

On Jan. 18, 2006, Mr. Smith became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He was very proud to be an American.

A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, his family was the center of his life. He especially enjoyed NASCAR.

Family members include his wife of 27 years, Monica (Blais) Smith; a stepdaughter, Susan Corson and her husband, Robert, of Goffstown; a stepson, Scott Hutchinson, of Uncasville, Conn.; three brothers, Brian, his twin, Howard, and Michael; five step-grandchildren, Matthew and his wife, Tricia, Nathan, Andrew, Corey, and Brady; two great-stepchildren, Braedyn and Alyssa.

Following cremation, a calling hour will be held Tuesday, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Connor-Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union St., corner of Concord Street, Manchester.

A memorial service will take place in the funeral home at noon, with the Rev. Msgr. Charles DesRuisseaux officiating.
