Boy Dies After Courageous Battle with Batten's Disease
The McKelvie fifth-grader died May 9 at his home in Bedford.
Nicholas R. Dainiak, an 11-year-old fifth-grader at the McKelvie Intermediate School in Bedford, died May 9 – on his birthday – after a "courageous six-year battle with Batten's disease," according to his obituary.

His parents, Christopher and Heather Dainiak, have established "Our Promise to Nicholas Foundation" to focus on birth defects and genetic diseases. The non-profit seeks to raise funds, promote awareness and provide education and research.
