Red Sox Open at Detroit Today, Celebrate Century at Fenway Next Friday

Though the Boston Red Sox won'y celebrate their 100th Opening Day at Fenway Park until next Friday, their true season opener is today, when the local nine travel to Comerica Park in Detroit to try to tame the pre-season World Series favorite Detroit Tigers, who signed slugger Prince Fielder to an offseason contract worth more than $200 million. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.

Jon Lester will be the starting pitcher for the Red Sox. He takes the mound opposite reigning AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. The

The Sox will be without closer Andrew Bailey, who will be out until the All-Star break due to thumb surgery. New Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentin has tabbed Alfredo Aceves to pitch the ninth inning of tight games until Bailey returns.

The game will be televised on NESN and ESPN2. It will be broadcast on radio by WEEI (93.7 FM/850 AM) and WWZN (1510 AM).

Among many Red Sox-friendly Manchester-area establishments such as Murphy's Taproom, places to watch the game in Bedford include the River Road Tavern and , which offers drink specials during all Boston games.

The home opener for the Red Sox is Friday, April 13. Boston will take on Tampa Bay at 2:05 p.m.
