Bedford Stop & Shop Location Leased by Surprising Tenant

Former supermarket has been vacant since August.

Hannaford already has two stores in Bedford, but according to a press release regarding a new Seacoast supermarket, the popular New England grocer appears to have also leased a third location in Bedford.

In the announcement, which was published on Exeter Patch earlier Friday, Hannaford revealed it will open a new store this spring in the old Stop & Shop location at 141 Portsmouth Ave. in Exeter.

As part of the transaction, Hannaford has also acquired a lease to the former Stop & Shop building in Bedford on Kilton Road in Bedford. The company said it is currently evaluating that site and has no immediate announcements related to the property or either of the other two Bedford locations.

The Exeter Hannaford will be the company’s 34th New Hampshire store – more than any other grocer in the state. Based in Maine, Hannaford will now have a total of 184 supermarkets in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York, including Bedford locations on Route 101 and Colby Court, the latter roughly a mile away from the old Stop & Shop supermarket.

The Kilton Road building has been vacant since August, when the company abruptly announced the closing of all six of its New Hampshire stores.
