Three-Alarm Fire Destroys Bedford Home

Off-duty firefighter spots blaze.

Despite a keen eye and a quick response, a Bedford home could not be saved from a three-alarm fire that engulfed it today.

Bedford Fire Chief Scott Wiggin said an unidentified Bedford firefighter was traveling on Route 101 when he spotted smoke through the trees.

He followed the smoke to 30 Ledgewood Road and quickly called in the working fire when he found the back of the home full ablaze.

Wiggin said the call was received at 10:59 a.m. and personnel were on the scene by 11:06 a.m.

It took nearly an hour to get the fire under control and confirm no one was home or trapped inside.

In total, more than 40 firefighters from nine departments – Amherst, Bedford, Derry, Goffstown, Hooksett, Londonderry, Manchester, Merrimack and Milford – responded to the fire.

Wiggin said damage to the two-and-a-half story home will likely result in a total loss.

There were no reported injuries to residents or firefighters and the cause of the blaze is still being investigated.
