Never Fear, Market Basket is Here!

Today's the day that you've all been waiting for. That and more in our daily five things you should know today.

1. Today's the day! It's been years in the making, and after several delays and a legal battle with Hannaford, Market Basket will open its doors to Bedford residents at 9 a.m. today. For more information on the 78,500 sq. ft. supermarket at 539 Donald Street, click here.

2. Wallace Road is open again! As Bedford Patch reported yesterday, Wallace Road was reopened Wednesday afternoon. That means no more detours on Beals Road and other local roadways to get to and from Merrimack. I'm a Merrimack resident, by the way, so happy days are, indeed, here again!

3. More rain. The forecasted high temperature today, according to Weather.com, is 69 degrees, with showers likely early and thunderstorms possibly developing in the afternoon. The chance of rain both today and tonight is 60 percent, and the overnight low is 52 degrees.

The idea for a "Mother's Day" is credited by some to Julia Ward Howe (1872) and by others to Anna Jarvis (1907), who both suggested a holiday dedicated to a day of peace. Many individual states celebrated Mother's Day by 1911, but it was not until Wilson lobbied Congress in 1914 that Mother's Day was officially set on the second Sunday of every May. In his first Mother's Day proclamation, Wilson stated that the holiday offered a chance to "[publicly express] our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."
