Bedford's First Female Police Sergeant Earned Her Stripes

Sgt. Humphrey began her career with Bedford PD in 2002.

Jessica Humphrey is well known in Bedford.

Not only has she been an integral part of the growth of the Bedford Police Department since beginning her law enforcement career on July 29, 2002, but she was also instrumental in bringing the “Are You Ok?” program to the town of Bedford.

Having successfully completed the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training 129th Academy in 2002, Humphrey has spent the last 10-plus years earning several letters of acknowledgment for outstanding service in the performance of her official duties and responsibilities including, but hardly limited to, the following efforts:

  • the capture of two burglars on January 29, 2003;
  • the apprehension of two armed robbers on December 26, 2003;
  • a motor vehicle stop on January 3, 2004, that led to two drug arrests;
  • her investigation of a serious motor vehicle accident in February 2005;
  • as well as her efforts in assisting in the investigation of two fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2006 and December 23, 2011.

In addition, Humphrey has received numerous notes, letters and accolades from members of the community in connection with her work as a uniformed patrol officer and school resource officer.

Most recently, Humphrey pushed hard to create and implement the highly acclaimed and successful aforementioned “Are You Ok?” program, which ensures the daily safety and well-being of enrolled Bedford senior citizens.

Humphrey has extensive experience in many law enforcement disciplines and is a certified drug recognition expert (DRE). She's attended numerous training seminars and has been instrumental in bringing her knowledge back to the members of the Bedford Police Department, according to Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski.

Most recently, Humphrey played a key role in the development of Bedford PD's new website, which will be unveiled in the near future.

Humphrey is currently attending Southern New Hampshire University where she is pursuing a master’s degree in Community Mental Health.

"I welcome Sgt. Humphrey as Bedford Police Department’s newest and first-ever female Patrol Sergeant and ask you all to join in by wishing her well in her new and challenging assignment leading the Bedford Police Department forward," said Bryfonski during Humphrey's promotion ceremony Tuesday.

She was joined at the ceremony by her husband, Bedford firefighter Jeff Humphrey, and her two children, 2-year-old Jack and 2-month-old James.
