AG: Gingrich May Have Broken NH Election Laws

Allegations stem from Windham event that followed Lincoln-Douglas debate with Jon Huntsman.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office says the Newt Gingrich campaign engaged in illegal behavior during the New Hampshire Primary, WMUR's James Pindell is reporting tonight.

An investigation began when someone complained they had received an automated call to a number on the do-not-call list, Pindell said. On one call was a message from Gingrich staffer Erin Lamontagne and on the other was Gingrich state director Andrew Hemingway. Both calls invited the recipient to attend an event with at Windham High School. The event drew nearly 1,000 people – one of the largest crowds in the state during the primary season. It followed the at Saint Anselm College.

Those violating the law are subject to a penalty of $5,000 per violation, but Pindell said the attorney general's office will not be pursuing any legal action against the Gingrich campaign.
